My Views

If you founded your own college or university, what topic of study would you make mandatory for all students to study and why? How would this class benefit students?

College or university education plays a vital role in a person who is willing to learn more.  In this important period, everyone takes many different classes and learn bunch of theories in order to get the degree. Some succeed while some fail during this process. There can be many reasons behind it, but as far as I believe, concentration on mind and the body strength can make an enormous influence in a person’s success and the failure. Therefore, if I founded my own college or university, I would make subjects based on developing mind concentration mandatory for all students.

I would like to make mind and body developing subjects or activities such as different styles of yoga, meditation or a martial art mandatory for all students because it improves personal disciplines and understanding about their own selves.  Mind has an ability to make a person completely negative as well as positive changing the confidence to face a challenge. Students will find time to think about their breath and body.  These kinds of activities can change the harmful behaviors such as drug addiction.  However, as a person who practices yoga and meditation, I can feel the difference in my mind and body after I started practicing. Once I talked to a shaolin kung-fu master at Fort Worth. He told me kung fu is all about working hard to build up the patient, strength, courtesy and respect towards others and endurance. Moreover he said, when someone practices kung-fu in a passionate manner, he will be the last person to get in to a fight. Therefore, I think that these subjects will give students many benefits with a moral effect.

This class benefits students in numerous ways. Most of students complain about their busy life styles and how hard to allocate time even though they want to practice. By this, they will get a chance to start yoga, meditation or martial art. It will allow them to decide how far they should go with it. They will be able to spend at least 50 minutes per week with themselves.  The more they practice the more they will be able to calm down their minds, their memory power and thinking ability will increase. They will become less aggressive and will practice courtesy and respect towards others. It also will increase the self-confidence eventually. All these help to succeed in their majors and to lead a peaceful and less stressful life style. Simultaneously, it will increase their flexibility and strength of the body which will help to protect themselves from diseases and reduce the probability that they get in accidents.

In conclusion, if I founded a college or university I would like to make mind and body developing subjects mandatory for all students because it increases the possibility to succeed in their major studies as well as in their majors. Moreover, when they become both mentally and physically strong, it will give them the happiness because they are capable of doing something impressive.

Enterprise Architecture

Enterprise Architecture (EA)
Enterprise Architecture is a method of transforming business vision and approach into useful enterprise modification by creating, communicating and improving the key requirements, principles and models that define the enterprise’s future state and empower its progress. The main goal of EAis effectiveness, efficiency, agility and durability of the enterprise. However, the MIT Center for Information Systems Research (MIT CISR) defines enterprise architecture as the specific aspects of a business as,
“ Enterprise architecture is the organizing logic for business process and IT infrastructure reflecting the integration and standardization requirements of the company’s operating model. The operating model is the desired state of business process integration and business process standardization for delivering goods and services to customers.”

Specialists of the EA are called as enterprise architects. An enterprise architect is accountable for carrying out this complex study of business structure and process and is often called upon to draw conclusions from the information collected. An enterprise can be recognized as a public or private sector organization, an entire business or corporation, a part of a large enterprise, a multiply outsourced business operation. Moreover, the term “enterprise” includes the whole complex, socio -technical system such as people, information, technology and business. A realistic EA provides a context and a scope. The context involves people, organizations, systems and technology out of scope that have interactions with the organizations, systems and technology scope. In exercise, the architect is in charge for the articulation of the scope context, engineers are accountable for the details of the scope. The architect are still responsible for the work of the engineers, and executing contractors afterwards.

Zachman Framework

Zachman Framework
Zachman Framework visual presentation

The Zachman framework is an important business tool which is used to model current functions, elements and processes in an organization. Moreover, it also sensitive to the changes occurs in the organization due to internal or external factors. This tool is designed by John Zachman for IBM in 1980. The framework is a combination of different business design philosophies in architecture and manufacturing. It provides different perspectives of the relationships among mechanisms in the enterprise. This framework is used by large organizations such as Volkswagen, General Motors, Bank of America and Health Canada.
The Zachman framework is represented as a two-dimensional grouping system to describe an enterprise. This representation is interesting because it has attractive characteristics. Each cell should be associated with the cells immediately above or below it; Each cell is distinctive; Every cell in a row must be affiliated with each other. However, joining cells in one row creates a comprehensive explanation of the enterprise from that specific aspect.

The columns of the Zachman framework represent questions that are asked from the enterprise. They are what (data), how (function), where (network), who (people), when (time) and why (motivation). The rows represent a discrete view of the organization  using various viewers. They are ordered in a preferred importance. The planner understands the scope of business and provides a contextual view. The owner understands the business model and provides a conceptual view. The builder improves the system model and can create a logical view. The designer creates the technology model  and gives a physical view. The sub-contractor recognizes the detailed representation of specific items, although they will have an out-of-context view. Finally, the user offers a view of the functioning enterprise from the user aspect.

Comparison of EOQ, EPL and (Q,r) Models

Introduction
Since manufacturing businesses generally obtain raw materials from different suppliers, the lead time variance of arrival time can cause difficulty in figuring out how frequently they should order raw materials and in what lot sizing to guarantee a smooth and uninterrupted manufacturing operation (Sedarage and Fujiwara, 1997).   Economic order quantity (EOQ) model, economic production lot size (EPL) model and the  (Q, r) model, play a vital role in inventory control and to find answers to the above mentioned problems in the industry. Economic order quantity model (EOQ) was first modelled by Ford W. Harris in 1913 to make a proper balance between lot size and setup cost (Hopp and Spearman, 2011). One of the main extensions of economic order quantity (EOQ) model is the economic production lot (EPL) model.  It focuses on the fact that replenishment is not being instantaneous in the real world, even though demand is constant and known (Hopp and Spearman, 2011). In many cases, the managers have to determine how many socks to carry as in the base stock model and also how much to produce or order at one time as in the economic order quantity (EOQ) model. The (Q, r) model has developed to address both of these cases, including both of these concepts (Hopp and Spearman, 2011).
The purpose of his paper is to compare economic order quantity (EOQ) model, economic production lot (EPL) model and (Q, r) model. In the background section, I have mentioned the basic assumptions of these models and equations that are used to calculate required variables. In the methodology section, I have used two questions from the “Factory Physics” by Hopp and Spearman to evaluate these models. Further, in the results and discussion section, I have discussed the results I acquired from the calculations. At the end of the paper I have mentioned the conclusion after examining these three models.

Background
Economic Order Quantity Model
Economic order quantity model (EOQ) can be used to determine the total cost of the process and the optimal order quantity. This model is based on 6 major assumptions.
  • Production is instantaneous
  • Delivery is immediate
  • Demand is deterministic
  • Demand is constant over time
  • A production run sustains a static setup cost
  • Products can be analyzed individually

In this model, we can get a cost function and using it, we can compute the optimal production lot size
Y(Q)=hQ/2+AD/Q+cD--------(1)
Where,
h – Holding cost
Q –Lot size
D – Demand rate (units per year)
A – Fixed setup cost to produce a lot
c- Unit production cost
Using cost function, we can formulate the equation to calculate the optimal lot size.

Q=√(2AD/h)-----------(2)

Economic Production Lot Model
In the economic production lot model, they assume that production is not instantaneous. Therefore, it develops the equation for calculating the optimal quantity as,
Q=√(2AD/(h(1-D/P)))  ______________________(3)
Where, P is the production rate.
When P= ∞, this equation becomes the normal EOQ model.  This model consequences in greater lot size to fit for the fact that replenishment times take to produce.
In both EOQ and EPL models, the decision variable is Q which is the lot size depending on the situation.

(Q, r) Model
This model focuses on how much stock to carry (base stock model) and how much to produce or order at a time (EOQ and newsvendor model). However, the major assumptions in a (Q, r) model are,
  • Continuous review of inventory
  • Demands occur one at a time.
  • Unfilled demand is backordered.
  • Replenishment lead times are fixed and known.

The main decision variables are
  • Reorder point (r)
  • Order Quantity (Q)

Moreover, the performance measures of a (Q, r) model are
F (Q, r) – average order frequency
F( Q,r)=D/Q  _________________(4)
This equation is also called  as replenishment orders per year as a function of Q and r.
S (Q, r) – average service level
S(Q,r)=1-1/Q (B(r)-B(r+Q))____________(5)
This equation is also called  as fraction orders filled stocks per year as a function of Q and r. When Q =1 , S (1, r)= S(R)= base stock fill rate.
B (Q, r) –average backorder level
B(Q,r)=   1/Q (β(r)-β(r+Q))________________(6)
Where,
 β=σ^2/2((z^2+1)(1-φ(z))-zφ(z))  and
z=(x-θ)/σ
σ is the standard deviation.
When Q =1, B (1, r) = B(R)= base stock backorder  level.
I (Q, r) – average inventory level
I(Q,r)=(Q+1)/2+r-θ+B(Q,r)________________(9)
When Q =1, I (1, r)= I(R)= base stock inventory level.

Methodology
This paper uses 2 questions from the Hopp’s and Speaman’s “Factory Physics.”
Example 1:
This example uses the EOQ model to compute optimal order quantity and  order quantity.
 A gift shop sells little lentils-cuddly animal dolls,  stuffed  with dried lentils- at a very steady pace of 10 per day, 310 days per year. The wholesale cost of a  doll is $5,  and the gift shop uses an animal interest rate of 20 percent to compute holding costs.
If  the shop wants to place an average of 20 replenishment orders per year, what order quantity should it use?
Using equation (4),
D=10*310= 3100
F= 20
Q= 3100/20 = 155
If the shop estimates the cost of placing an order to be $10, what is the optimal order quantity?
Using equation (2),
A =$10
H= 0.20*5 = 1
D=3100
Q= √((2*10*3100)/1) ~ 248
According the example, the EOQ model is insensitive to variations in demand. Moreover, the optimal order quantity is greater than the order quantity in this case.

Example 2:
In the example 2, the paper studies how to do computations using (Q, r) model.
Jill, the office manager of a desktop publishing outfit, stocks replacement toner  cartridges for laser printers. Demand for a cartridge is approximately 30 per year and is quite variable. Cartridges cost $100 each and require 3 weeks to obtain from the vendor. Jill uses a (Q, r) approach to control stock levels.
If Jill wants to restrict replenishment orders to twice per year on average. What batch size Q should she use?
Using equation (4)
D=30 per year
F= 2 per year
Q= 30/2 =15
The Q size is 15.
If Jill wants to restrict replenishment orders to 6 times per year on average. What batch size Q should she use?
Using equation (4)
D=30 per year
F= 6 per year
Q= 30/6 =5
The Q size is 5.
Using this batch sizes, what reorder point should she use to ensure service level of 98%  ?
Computing mean (θ) when 30 units per year and the lead time is 3 weeks,
θ = (30*3)/52 = 1.730769231
Standard deviation = √θ  = 1.315587029
Using equations (5) and (6), below table was constructed to find the reorder point compatible with the service level according to the given order  quantities.

Therefore, when Q= 15, the reorder point (r ) is 5 and when Q= 5, the reorder point is ( r ) is 4.

Results and Discussion
The economic production lot model is an extension of  the economic order quantity model. We use economic production lot model when production is not instantaneous.  When production rate is equal to infinity, economic production lot model behaves like the economic order quantity model.  Still, in the economic order quantity model, optimal order quantity can be greater or smaller the order quantity. The optimal order quantity depends on setup cost, demand and holding cost.
However, the (Q, r) model implies that increasing demand tends to increase the optimal order quantity;  Increasing quantity tends to increase the optimal reorder point; Increasing the variability of the demand process tends to increase the optimal reorder point; Increasing the holding cost tends to decrease the optimal order quantity and reorder point.

Conclusion
In summary, the similarities among these three models include that continuous review time of inventory, single product model, deterministic production, setup or other cost, infinite horizon and single echelon production line. EOQ and EPL models are almost the same except for having a finite production rate in EPL model, but (Q, r) model also has an infinite production rate as EOQ model. Other than that, (Q, r) model has backordering and random demand, which both EOQ or EPL models don’t have.

Review on "Seasonal Forests" from Planet Earth series

Watching wild life and nature documentaries is a tiresome task. That’s what we think before we watch the “Seasonal Forests” from the “Planet Earth” series, but when we keep watching it, it become unexpectedly fascinating.  The lives of unnoticed trees in the different parts of the world, unseen wild creatures in different places in different seasons and the commentator’s style and tone of presenting were the some of reasons that we found the video was unexpectedly interesting.

This video showed us about many unnoticed trees and forests worldwide in different seasons.Taiga forests which include conifer trees grow in various manners under different weather conditions. Conifers living in Arctic, which is considered as the first place on earth that trees can grow, take at least 50 years to mature because its growing period lasts only 1 month per year due to the lack of sunlight. Their leaves are like needles in order to keep water stability. Moreover, a few varieties of animals eat conifer needles as their food. Thus, trees can save their amount of water conserved. We were amazed to see how those trees survive even in the harsh winter and to see the techniques they use to continue their lives.

Further, according to the video, conifer trees can be seen in Pacific coast of North America, the land of hemlock, Douglas fir, and giant redwood. Unlike in Arctic, these trees grow half of the year due to the sunlight. Moreover, their needles are able to extract moisture from fog. As a result, these trees grow even more times larger and quicker than conifers in Arctic. In addition, they survive over thousands of years. One grove of redwoods in California contains three tallest trees on earth which we even can’t imagine their sizes. One of them is said that their height is compared to 30 storied building which is 100 meters high. Moreover, giant sequoia that is also known as general Sherman is the largest living being on earth according to the documentary. It has a weight of ten blue whales. Bristle cone pine is considered as the oldest organism on the planet.  It was there when the Egyptians built pyramids and they were said to be already 3000 years when Jesus Christ was born. We were so delighted to have knowledge about these magnificent trees.

Taiga forests in North have similarities and differences to the Taigas in South. On one hand North and South Taiga forests can be considered as the mirror image of the other.  Araucaria trees or monkey puzzles have water proof scales instead of needles and cones look little differentthough their principal remains the same. However, these forests are not rich in animals like in North other than miniature creatures. It is a miraculous phenomenon to have these kinds of characteristics to trees although they live thousands of miles away to each other. We think that they have used to in the same region thousands years ago.

During spring in North, forests of Homme cover the area with a fresh green color with widen leaves. Instead of needle leaves, these leaves are broadening with entirely different characteristics to absorb more light and they are thin, soft and edible. During the same season, the broad leaved forests in Eastern Europe and in Asiatic Russia have the same characteristics.
